Phone Booth Humor

Ya’ll, I am SO PSYCHED to have the phenomenal S.M. Hutchins here today. Her blog, Live Wonderstruck , is one of my favorites – she is not only wise but funny. Without further ado…here she is, talking about one of my very favorite subjects!

One of features I like on Laird’s blog is “Bad Movies That Rock.” I mean, really, don’t we all have our favorites? Since she invited me to guest post, I thought it might be fun to participate.

I’m fully aware that my list of favorite movies makes me look a little schizophrenic. At the top of my list are the Die Hard movies (all of them) and While You Were Sleeping. That alone should give you a glimpse into my personal polarity.

Another favorite, though, for which I’ve been given some pretty crazy looks is Jumpin’ Jack Flash. I LOVED it. In fact, I still love it. Yep, it’s true.

Sometimes you go back and watch movies you liked when you were younger and realize you might have been crazy back then. Not this one. I can’t help it. I still laugh my butt off, as I’m saying lines right along with the movie. Whoopi Goldberg was dead on comedically. Of course, it could also just mean that I was crazy back then and I haven’t grown out of it. I think I’m okay with that.

All I’m saying is every time Whoopi calls for help from a telephone booth being towed through New York City saying, “I’m a little black woman in a big silver box. It says ‘Phone’ on top. HEELLLLPPP!,” yes, I have to wipe tears from my eyes from laughing so hard.

In case you missed it or would like to revisit it, watch the video below. There is cursing, so if that’s not your thing, consider yourself warned.

Also, if you are too young to know what a phone booth is, let me explain. Back in the old days we didn’t have cell phones, so if you wanted to call someone you had to either go home or find a phone booth where you would slide a creaky door closed and put a quarter in an industrial looking phone. Then you could talk briefly until this person (automated or real) would come on the line asking you to insert more money or hang up.

Now that we’ve cleared that up, here’s the video.

What is your favorite? One of mine is the scene in “Groundhog Day” where Bill Murray kidnaps the groundhog and drives him over a cliff, Thelma and Louise style. For some reason, I find that endlessly funny. I’m not sure what that says about me….

Big Business with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin slays me! Supposedly, both women are a set of twins that get mixed up in a little rural hospital. Each family takes home one of each set. Just thinking of Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin as “twins” makes me laugh. So many scenes send me on the floor. It’s so 1988…and my favorite bad movie I love!

So funny to explain what a phone booth is – I had to do this with my 9 year old the other day when Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure came on. He was like, “what is that thing they keep getting into? That’s cool.” Geez…
